PHS Facility Task Force Created
PHS Facility Task Force Created
Posted on 03/31/2023

A Task Force comprised of building staff and district administrators has been created at PHS to address short and long-term capital facility needs. Facility challenges continue to plague the school building, the most recent of these involve the ongoing maintenance and care of the Library Science building. Systems in this building continue to fail without notice. Although old and challenging to maintain, the Library Science Building is not a current health and safety risk and remains open to select classrooms. However, after reviewing all the maintenance challenges, the Task Force has determined that the Library Science Building will close to staff and students in the fall of the 2023-2024 school year.
-
• The Library Science Building is 61 years old; certain systems like HVAC and plumbing are over 35 years old.
-
• The Library Science Building is rated as the 2nd worst building in the district. (Condition Assessment Score 40.5% on a scale of 100 and Facility Index Condition Score of 23%)
-
• Identified repairs for this building include a roof replacement, HVAC system replacement and controls upgrade, fire alarm upgrades, structural seismic improvements, sewer upgrade and repairs, and elevator pit repairs.
-
• Current known deficiencies total $4.5M.
Here is what is currently being done …
-
• Reviewing cost estimates for identified work needed
-
• Evaluating how to spend limited capital funds
-
• Developing a short and long-term building plan
What’s the long-term plan to fix everything that needs to be fixed at PHS?
The short answer is that the district needs more funding to make critical repairs. PHS specifically, needs a bond to address the previously identified ‘master plan of improvements.’ District administration is currently reviewing future bond and levy needs and partnering with industry experts on the ideal time to present this to voters.
