The Daffodil Court promotes education, community pride and volunteerism in Pierce County under the Daffodil Festival organization. One princess is selected to represent PHS. Princesses gain many invaluable lessons and experiences, developing public speaking skills, tact and poise while gaining self-confidence through the interactions they have with their community.

Eligibility Requirements per the Daffodil Festival:

  • Must be a senior with regular attendance.
  • 3.2 Cumulative GPA
  • Never have been married or given birth.
  • Never found guilty or committed felony.
  • Must attend at least one class at PHS (for Running Start Students)

Speech and Debate team promotes scholarship through intensive research, preparation, argumentation, and public speaking, students study multiple forms of debate, interpretation, platform and limited preparation speaking. Students will compete at PHS and with teams from the region, state and nation. Viking Debate has garnered both state and national awards. Students will have the opportunity to apply for travel tournaments and degrees of honor with the National Forensics League. Intensive fundraising after-school and weekend hours required. DECA gives students hands-on experience in the fields of marketing, business, and entrepreneurship. Washington DECA teaches leadership characteristics that mold high school students into character-driven leaders through conferences and competitions.

At PHS Business and Marketing students apply their knowledge and skills in a hands-on experiencerunning the student store (The Wall) and the espresso bar (The Viking Blend).

Student must have current enrollment in any of the Business and Marketing classes. See advisers for specific requirements and details.

This activity emphasizes advanced acting skills including monologue and duo-scene work, character and script analysis, movement and improvisation skills as well as production skills. Students perform monologues, scenes, and sometimes one-act plays as well as preparing for state drama festivals. Some after school and weekend participation required. Math club creates a community of students committed to exploring the depths and potential of mathematics as well as encourages students to further pursue as well as encourages students to further pursue mathematics outside of a classroom setting. Students in the club learn about different aspects of mathematics and compete in competitions on a local and national scale preparing throughout the year. Students will serve the school and community through math tutoring, furthering their understanding of tutored subjects.

Stagecraft teaches practical application of technical theater. Students will gain skill in terminology, lighting, set design and construction, painting, sound design, and stage management. The Technology Student Association (TSA) is the only student organization devoted exclusively to the needs of students interested in technology. Open to students enrolled in or who have completed technology education and STEM courses. Our members are interested in careers in Architecture, Engineering, Manufacturing, Film/Video Production, Graphic Arts, Videogame Design and many other technical areas. Members learn through exciting competitive events, leadership opportunities and much more. The diversity of activities makes TSA a positive experience for every student from engineers to business managers. TSA will take the study of STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) beyond the classroom and give students the chance to pursue academicchallenges among friendswith similar goals and interests. Together, members work on competitive events, attend conferences on the state and national levels and have a good time raising funds to get there.

Viking Knights & Ladies areservice oriented. They assist at plays, concerts, and other school events. They are called upon to represent the school on many occasions. Founded in 1927, this is the oldest high school service organization in the state. The Vanguard's goal is to produce a high-quality, professional-looking student newspaper that acts as a school community forum to inform, educate, clarify, persuade, analyze, provide constructive criticism, praise, and entertain readers. The program also provides vocational training in writing, editing, research, design, computer technology, interpersonal relationships, entry-level skills in desktop publishing. Editorial board positions are open through interview and application along with the completion of the beginning journalism course.
