Puyallup
Wrestling has a long and successful history. Becoming a varsity sport
in 1955, the VIKS have produced a number of league, region, and state
champions over the years, and were a dominant power in the old Puget
Sound League in the 1960's. More recently, Puyallup won 11 SPSL
Championships between 1980 and 1992 and was consistently among the top
ten teams in the state. Puyallup's success on the mat led to Coaches
Ray Barnes and George Wilfong being inducted in the Washington State
Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame. The excellence continues today with six
state medalists in the last seven years. Wrestlers compete within 14
weight classes ranging from 103 pounds to 275 pounds. The season runs
from mid November through the third week of February.
